Challenge: Take Inspiration from Maps and Globes

17:37

I've been having a lot of fun participating in the weekly challenges over at shimelle.com.  This week we were challenged to take inspiration from maps and globes.  If you follow Shimelle's work you will see that she uses these motifs often because she has a passion for travel.  I have adopted some of her ideas on maintaining continuity within an album by repeating motifs, so that you will see a common thread as you flip through the pages.  I am attempting to include several reappearing motifs in my own album about my trip to Italy.  One of those is maps and globes.

I was really glad to get some of these really cute heart shaped 'globe' embellishments by Jolee's Boutique onto a page.  I purchased them in a pack, but I think that you could pretty easily recreate them using your own supplies.  In the future I would love to use them as inspiration to create some handmade embellishments by punching hearts out of map paper, layering word stickers on top, and adding plane stickers or stamps.  The other map element I used on the page is a scalloped border piece that I've been waiting to use from the Simple Stories I AM sticker sheet.

I used a few past Glitter Girl episodes for inspiration on the layout: Glitter Girl Adventure 079: Plan a Proper Panorama for the page design and Glitter Girl Adventure 099: Read between the Twine for some ideas on embellishment.  Although this is not a panoramic photo, it is a photo of the view to the left and right of the beach, so I liked how they looked side by side to mimic that.  I used embroidery thread and twisted it into loops and glued it down.  I like how the loop-de-loops mimic the path that the wood vaneer planes are flying in.  I used a loop of thread to circle Italy and Sicily on the map and popped up a geotag sticker on pop dots to draw attention to the location.  I pulled out some older embellishments and I love the result - flower shaped brads that I inherited from my mother-in-law.  I finished off the page by adding some sprinkles of mist along the diagonal of the page in pink and gold.  This page is brighter and more colourful than my usual style, but I am happy with it.
